Safe to school with baby masks in 3 sizes

The start of school is always a very exciting time for children, but also for parents. We at SewShop thought we'd help secure this somewhat peculiar school year by offering you a tutorial for making baby masks at home in three sizes.

How to make DIY baby masks sewshop

To make the shaped and lined baby masks in 3 sizes we need:

  • paper pattern of the selected size
  • fabric of different colors
  • rubber bands
  • scissors
  • tape measure
  • pins
  • sewing machine

Begin making the outer part of the template by taking a folded piece of fabric and fastening the paper pattern-which already has seam allowances-on it with pins. Cut out the template and pin the two fabric portions together on the curved side. Do the same thing with the lining fabric.

Take the sewing machine and sew both pieces together on the pin side. Profile both on the outer and inner fabric the seam allowance, reducing it to about half an inch.

Open the two parts of the template and fold toward the right or left side both seam allowances. Pin the pieces together by matching the center seam, and pin the top and bottom edges together.

Go over the piece with the sewing machine. Sew the edge corresponding to the line of the nose with a single straight seam. Underneath the chin, however, leave a small space in the middle that you will need to turn up the template.

Now insert the elastic bands into the open side spaces and secure them with a seam. Trim the excess edges at the corners and fold the template back through the opening under the chin.

Now pin the open profile respecting the seam allowance by closing it with a small stitch with a sewing machine or by hand.

And here is the mask ready for your children!

According to the latest regulations issued by the government on the use of filter masks in the classroom, we have decided to enrich the previous tutorial with another mini-guide to show you how to add a pocket inside the mask where you can insert the filter.

Take a baby filter, fold it in half and cut out a portion the size of the filter on the pattern paper. Cut it out on the fabric by trimming the edges and sew it on the curved side. Fold the edges inward by topstitching them so you have a clean edge.

Lay the reverse side of the pocket on the right side of the facemask, match the center seam and sew the two fabric portions together. Once the pocket has been affixed to the facemask lining with one seam on the top rhyme and one on the bottom rhyme, use the sewing machine to fasten the two fabric portions together from the curved side.

Lay the reverse side of the pocket on the obverse of the template and sew them together on the two ends, leaving one side open for inserting the filter.
