How to choose the work surface for sewing machines?

Choosing a proper work surface for a sewing machine could prove to be quite a difficult task, especially for those who do not know what are the tricks to make the best use of this working tool.

Why buy a sewing machine

Let's take a few small steps back before we figure out how to choose a countertop for the sewing machines. Today in any store, supermarket and shopping mall there is a large quantity of everything we might want for clothing or for the home. But then why do many people decide to make these products themselves with sewing machines? There are many reasons, from saving money to a passion for the world of sewing and DIY to creative sewing.

Where to place the sewing machine: i worktops

To be used properly, the sewing machine needs a work surface that is sturdy and large enough to accommodate the machine itself, some of the fabric that will be used, and possibly the tools.

The ever-increasing popularity of portable sewing machines has meant that any table can become a suitable work surface although, space permitting, having a work surface reserved for sewing machine work only and a dedicated room would be the ultimate for any sewing enthusiast, from hobbyist to professional.

There are also work tables on the market designed specifically for the sewing machine, where the machine can also be stored when not in use.

Many people will remember the old sewing machines of aunts and grandmothers, built into a small cabinet. The function of this cabinet was exactly the same as that of a work surface.

The size of the worktop depends, of course, on the size of the room in which the worktop is to be placed. In any case, it would be recommended to have at least a shelf measuring one meter by eighty centimeters, bearing in mind that the larger the size of the worktop, the easier it will be to work with large fabrics.

In addition, a larger table top allows you to accommodate, in addition to the sewing machine and perhaps the overlocker, any tools, drafts, and anything else you need to complete your project.

Whatever the choice, i.e., a work surface designed specifically for sewing machines or the use of an ordinary table, it should be borne in mind that the surface of the table top should be smooth, but at the same time the sewing machine should be prevented from slipping on the table top itself or moving during use.

Also keep in mind the weight of the sewing machine; very heavy machines (such as older models) need solid surfaces that will not give way under the weight of the machine.

In case there are two or more sewing machines, we recommend that at least one corner in the house be set aside exclusively for sewing, in order to save time in setting up the necessary equipment for one's work.
