The various technological innovations that have occurred over the various years of our history have changed much of our daily lives, but not only that. In fact, many of them have also affected working conditions.
While these technological innovations have sometimes brought prosperity, they have not had a purely positive impact. In fact, with their advent new previously unknown social conditions have developed. In practice, they have gone on to redefine labor organization entirely, creating, however, sometimes inhumane working conditions.
A sure protagonist of this epic story was the sewing machine.
A purely rural mass that saw the advent of industrialization as the means to get out of chronic poverty. It was, in fact, right from that time that, first in the United States and England and later in the rest of Europe, a massive urbanization developed, with unimaginable consequences. In practice, what history has labeled the first industrial revolution had been initiated. Of course, this ferment also directly affected the sewing machine industry sector. In this regard, it should be noted that in Italy the first industry to produce them was, in 1877, the Salmoiraghi company.
Beyond any assessment, objectively it must be acknowledged that for countless centuries women have experienced very harsh working conditions. If women in preindustrial society contributed to the sustenance of their households by also working in the fields, it must be admitted that the industrial revolution, among other things, meant that women's labor and others were systematically exploited.
All of this, of course, also took place in the world of sewing. In fact, if first women were used in tailors' shops to sew by hand, then the same women were employed for industrial achievements. However, in this bleak time represented, especially, in Victorian England, a glimmer of light was provided precisely by sewing machines. With their advent, in fact, much of the hard manual labor was performed mechanically. A small step toward a better future.
In the big picture, the industrial development of textile processing gave rise to a real change in customs and consumption. Among the various benefits associated with the advent of the introduction of the sewing machine Prominent, undoubtedly, is the speeding up of production.
In other words, thanks to this innovative and revolutionary machine, garment packaging, among other things, could be increased. All of this, therefore, contributed to the fact that costs related to the production of more garments were lowered. In essence, with mass packaging, industrialization gave the possibility of being able to have more choice, larger quantities and, most importantly, at a cost that was also affordable to the masses.
The refinement that has taken place over time of this fundamental working tool, moreover, has given the possibility of being able to make mechanical even such operations as, for example, embroidery, buttonholing, button sewing, and overthreading, as well as operations that previously had to be exclusively done by hand such as mending and basting.
While various technological innovations, such as the sewing machine, have changed the modus vivendi of rural society, it must be admitted that they have helped make the work of so many women much easier.
