Sustainable fashion and style: how to be cool in an ethical way

The beginning of every year is chock-full of good resolutions, but 2021 is definitely a year that invites us to be more aware of our actions and the long-term consequences they may have. If you are a lover of beauty and style, how about approaching the sustainable fashion, and cultivate your interest in a more ethical but still stylish perspective, embracing the philosophy of slow fashion?

Embracing the style of ethical and sustainable fashion is easier and more interesting than you might imagine, especially if you have a faithful ally on your side: the sewing machine.

Rely on the dear sewing machine and start giving new life to your clothes!

Your closet can hold more surprises than you think! Rummage through it well and you'll discover that you have items you didn't remember existed that will appear new to you! On the other hand, if you find that they are now out of fashion, personalize them and give them a new life with your trusty friend: the sewing machine. Add a detail to your pullover, give your flared jeans a new line, or even, convert the garment by giving it another use and create something completely different with the’upcycling. Or start from scratch and create handmade clothes that fully reflect your taste.

But let's get some clarity on what it means to adhere to the philosophy of the slow fashion.

Slow fashion, the new “slow fashion” that brands like

The slow fashion is a concept that literally translates to “slow fashion” and is opposed to the “fast fashion”, that trend that tends to create several collections in a very short time and at low cost. Such massive, very low-cost production results in the exploitation of labor that is usually relocated to those countries where the right to work is poorly protected, and exploitation is a social scourge that has been turned away from for too long. Until April 24, 2013, when Bangladesh was the scene of a tragedy that shook the consciences of many leading fast fashion brands and others. We are talking about Rana Plaza, the eight-story building that housed apartments, stores and textile workshops. Days before the tragedy, cracks had been reported for which some businesses were closed, except for the textile ones, and the very workers who were left to work in these workshops were victims of the collapse.

In addition to this foretold tragedy, the other negative consequences of fast fashion involve the waste produced by textile processing that ends up in wastewater or rivers, whose water is used by people for daily needs and for cultivating fields.

These aspects have raised awareness toward an approach to fashion that does not neglect the moral aspect, giving rise to a strand of ecological and sustainable fashion that respects the timing of seasonality, a pivotal concept of “slow fashion.”.

Now you may ask, how can I participate in this revolution and change my habits? I'll explain it below, keep reading!

Go through your closet and assess what you really need

Scan your closet and consider your next purchases based on what you already have. For a cool wardrobe, in fact, you don't need so many pieces, but the right ones to invest in. I suggest you research the brands that embrace sustainable clothing and work with ethical methods, now some very interesting ones are emerging!

If you can't help but give in to items that appeal to you, don't be seduced by impulse buying, especially online, but look for an original piece, perhaps at the flea market, so as to facilitate reuse and recycling.

These are just some of the gestures you can make to make your contribution to sustainable fashion and bring a more ethical sense to your style choices.
