Choosing a sewing machine: better mechanical or computerized?

When choosing a sewing machine, one is dealing with dozens of different models, equipped with features and accessories that differentiate them from one another, often considerably.

One of the main doubts when choosing concerns a fundamental feature of sewing machines: is it better to have a mechanical or an electronic machine? There is no absolute better machine between the two: let's see what specific needs may make one or the other choice.

The difference between a mechanical sewing machine and an electronic one

Mechanical sewing machines

Le mechanical sewing machines, that is, not equipped with a computerized system for use, are those of more traditional design. For this reason, many people already able to use a sewing machine prefer them, as they are closer to the previously used models on which the first steps in sewing were taken.

Consider also that many people are unfamiliar with technological objects or still voluntarily prefer not to use them especially for activities such as sewing or hobbies in general.

In addition, in most cases mechanical sewing machines have a lower basic price than computerized models. However, this type of machine generally allows for a smaller number of stitches, a smaller variety of materials on which to sew, and also requires a more complex process to set various adjustments

The computerized sewing machines

Unlike mechanical ones, the computerized sewing machines include functions that make it easier to achieve the final result and also save time in many operations, including starting or finishing the work.

Compared with conventional sewing machines, computerized sewing machines also allow greater control over sewing speed, often without the need to use a foot pedal to operate the machine.

In addition, this type of machine in most cases allows the processing of a greater number of materials and, a not insignificant factor, offers a far greater choice of accessories than the other type of sewing machine.

Costs are usually higher precisely because of the presence of more features. Despite this, the market offers many computerized machines  at very affordable prices, with a range of prices therefore quite variable.

Many people believe that using a computerized machine can be much more complex, but this is not true. In most cases learning its functions is no more difficult than learning to use any household appliance or cell phone.

A final feature to keep in mind is that electronic sewing machines are often lighter than traditional models, a factor to keep in mind especially if you have to move the machine frequently, even if only within a home, as is the case for those who do not have a specific room dedicated only to sewing machine use.

The verdict

As can be understood from the preceding paragraphs, there is no absolute perfect machine, but the perfect one for everyone's intended use and preferences.

A word of advice: before buying, make a list of features and accessories that you consider necessary for a sewing machine: they will help you choose the best model for your needs.
