Shirt refashion tutorial: give new life to your old shirt

Does it happen to you, too, that you have a piece of clothing worn out by years and too many wears that you don't dare to throw away? Maybe you are attached to it by a sentimental memory, or, simply, you like it too much to get rid of it. In this tutorial we show you how easy it is to salvage a worn and torn shirt and give it new life!

In this case we decided to turn the original collar into a mandarin collar, to remove the worn portion and leave the intact one. While, to remove the tear in the back of the shirt we shortened and trimmed it.

Making this kind of alterations does not require extraordinary skills with sewing, so it is suitable even for beginners. Just equip yourself with your trusty sewing machine and follow our step-by-step tutorial. Let's get started!

What you need

  • Sewing machine
  • buttonhole opener
  • needles

How to create the mandarin collar

Remove the ruined collar leaving only the pistagna, that is, the base from which you will get the mandarin collar.

Take the buttonhole opener to remove the seams that hold the collar to the pistagna together. When you have finished unstitching the two portions of fabric, all you need to do is join the two fabric edges of the pistagna with pins.

Now it's time to get your sewing machine and start sewing your new Korean-style collar. Make a topstitching seam on the edge of the runway and the Korean-style collar is ready!

How to hide the tear on the shirt

Now move on to sewing the bottom hem of the shirt. Match the side seams right sides together by stopping them with a pin. Match the rest of the hem as well.

Having located the hole in the shirt, redraw above the tear a new hem with a water-soluble fabric pen, and secure this too with pins.

At this point all you have to do is cut the fabric, obtaining a new raw hem. To prevent it from fraying, overcast it with a zigzag stitch. Once the new hem is finished, fasten it with pins about half an inch apart and sew it with the sewing machine.

You have finished refashioning your shirt, it was easy wasn't it? Now you can continue to show it off like new!
